DC Gamma

Word From The President

Family, Friends and Brothers:

Thank you for visiting us, the DC Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Georgetown University.  â€śThis fraternity will be different,” wrote the founders of SigEp, “it will be based on the love of God and the principle of peace through brotherhood.”

As the only social fraternity on campus, we dedicate ourselves to living out the ideals our founders set before us, namely commitment to our cardinal principles of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love. It is from these principles that a unique brotherhood arises; one that requires each individual member to not only better himself, but also his fellow SigEps and the greater community.

Such a commitment to personal development is manifest in the Balanced Man Program. Rather than the traditional pledging model that other fraternities employ, we recruit members through a four- to six-week non-hazing program that includes events such as to give a glimpse into life in the fraternity as well as a selective two-round interview process. Recruits that accept a bid immediately become full brothers in equal standing with the rest of the chapter, and begin the Balanced Man Program.

The Program consists of the Sigma, Phi and Epsilon challenges, designed to promote the development of a scholar, athlete, gentleman, and leader, in different stages of the college experience. Each stage challenges brothers to build workout plans, attend various cultural events, participate in community service activities, prepare resumes and professional skills, and, generally, learn to develop positive living habits. In each stage, members are asked to set goals for themselves based on the guides of developing a Sound Mind and a Sound Body. Recent member development events include weekly volunteering at St. Elizabeth’s hospital to visit with patients, a presentation from Brooks Brothers on business dress and etiquette, a seminar on proper nutrition and health, and a trip to the National Museum of the Marine Corps on our biannual retreat.

Outside of specific member development programming, our events aim at enhancing the Georgetown experience of brothers through events that allow us to escape the campus vicinity. These include our yearly paintball and white water rafting excursions, recent trips to professional basketball and baseball games, and various date events including a visit to a haunted house, the lighting of the National Christmas tree, and a formal dance at the end of every semester.

By the end of senior year, our graduating brothers can look back at their SigEp experience as giving them a guiding light in our cardinal principles of Virtue, Diligence and Brotherly Love, as well as some of the best friends they will ever have. They can say that they took advantage of everything that Georgetown and the District have had to offer, and that they are adequately prepared to lead a balance life based on the ideals of the Greeks.

We thank you sincerely for your support as friends, family and brothers, and welcome you to contact us with any questions, concerns, or just to talk. We look forward to hearing from you and sharing more of our experiences.

In Fraternity,

Zack Hubbard

Brother President
