Word From The President

Family, Friends and Brothers:

Thank you for visiting us, the DC Gamma chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon at Georgetown University.  As the only social fraternity on campus, our fraternity is designed to help brothers actively pursue personal development by collectively pushing their boundaries and engaging in unique activities that a normal Georgetown student would never experience. Our motto of personal development through brotherhood encompasses our central values and the belief that by working together, we can enrich ourselves and those around us while developing lifelong bonds of friendship.

Brothers’ paths begin with our four- to six-week long, hazing-free recruitment process. Rush events take place once or twice a week, and range from group basketball game watches, football games, and informal lunches with current brothers to laser tag, ice skating, and a burrito eating competition.  After two rounds of interviews, recruits selected by the committee join our fraternity and immediately become full brothers in equal standing with the rest of the chapter.

The next step is to begin the national Balanced Man Program, itemized in our chapter by the broad Sigma, Phi, and Epsilon Challenges and supported by our Sound Mind and Sound Body Challenges.  These programs are in place to guide brothers to build workout plans, attend various cultural events, participate in community service activities, prepare resumes and professional skills, and, generally, learn to develop positive habits.  Several highlights from the past year include a presentation from Brooks Brothers on business dress and etiquette, a seminar on proper nutrition and health, a trip to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital to spend time with patients, and camping and rock climbing on our biannual retreats.

Outside of our specific personal development programs, much of our programming aims simply to get brothers off campus to have fun together in atypical activities.  These include our yearly paintball and white water rafting excursions, recent trips to professional basketball and baseball games, and various date events including a visit to a haunted house, the lighting of the National Christmas tree, and a formal dance at the end of every semester.

By the end of their senior years, brothers in SigEp have grown through their belief in and adherence to our cardinal principles of Virtue, Diligence, and Brother Love.  They will be personally prepared for a balanced life beyond college, have some of their best friends for life, and own a host of memorable times to look back on.  They lived and learned the most possible from their time at Georgetown by taking full advantage of all available resources and opportunities.

We hope that you will spend time and learn alongside us as family, friends, and brothers. If you have any questions or would simply like to talk, please do not hesitate to contact us.  We look forward to hearing from you and continuing to share our experiences with you.

In Fraternity,

Jeff Wray

Brother President
